You never know what to expect when you go to see a new band, especially when the show is free. So when I saw on Facebook that the Catawba Valley Brewery was opening on a Saturday night featuring a band out of Asheville I had never heard of before, I figured you get what you pay for. With a band name like Circus Mutt, I wasn’t expecting much. So I went hoping for the best – actually, I was hoping for not too bad. I walked into the Brewery and got my usual Farmer Ted, a tasty pale ale and my favorite. I watched the band set up and run through their sound checks. They ran through a song during the sound check and I was hooked. Their roots rock style blended well with the Brewery. Great vocals mixed with strings (guitar and mandolin) and bongos. Their bio on ReverbNation pegs them – “Circus Mutt brings a rootsy, funky, twangy twist to their songs and performances.” Together since only 2010, these guys sound like they’ve been together much longer. I didn’t get to stay for both sets due to a prior commitment, but I loved what I did get to hear and I’m already looking ahead to see where they play next. Here’s their page on ReverbNation - www.reverbnation.com/circusmutt - with four of their songs that you can listen to and share. I would definitely recommend seeing these guys if you get a chance. I can’t say I like the band’s name, but I love their music.
